Lengua Bracelet in Sterling Silver & Gold Vermeil

The Lengua Silver and Gold Bracelet is our Lengua Bracelet with alternating links in 24k gold vermeil, made by hand in our workshop in Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico.

It belongs to our Lengua Collection, inspired by the universal language of communication. The links reinterpret the tongue — a symbol we found throughout pre-Hispanic codices, where it stands for speech, knowledge and human connection.

Every other link is finished in 24k gold vermeil: 2.5 microns of gold over a solid .925 sterling silver body. Vermeil is a defined standard, not a marketing word — it requires a sterling base and a heavy gold layer, and it's what separates a piece like this from costume plating. The two metals alternate down the wrist, so the bracelet reads warm from one angle and cool from the other.

Our silversmiths build it using cartoneado, a technique Taxco has practiced for generations: sheets of .925 sterling are die-stamped, then soldered one by one into a hollow form. That's why something this substantial sits featherlight on the wrist.

It moves from day to night without changing register. Wear it while you're having the conversation, not after.

Care

Silver is a living material and will develop a patina over time. Polish the silver links with a silver cloth to bring back the shine. Treat the vermeil links gently — wipe them with a soft dry cloth only, never with silver polish or abrasives, which wear gold down. Take the bracelet off before swimming and store it dry.

Questions

What is gold vermeil? Vermeil is a regulated term, not a description. To qualify, a piece must have a solid sterling silver base and a gold layer of at least 2.5 microns. Ours is 24k gold at exactly that standard over .925 sterling. Ordinary gold plating is often a fraction of a micron over base metal — a different product with a similar name.

Will the gold wear off? Not with reasonable care. Vermeil is thick enough to hold up to normal wear. Avoid silver polish and abrasive cloths on the gold links, take it off before swimming, and keep it away from perfume and household cleaners.

Is the piece solid or hollow? Hollow. We build the links with cartoneado, a traditional Taxco technique: sheets of .925 sterling silver are die-stamped and hand-soldered into a hollow form. It's what makes a 64-gram bracelet feel featherlight.
