Sol Spur Pin Pequeño in Sterling Silver

Sale price$160.00

Descripción

The Sol Spur Pin Pequeño is a .925 sterling silver sun brooch set with a natural stone, made by hand in our workshop in Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico. It's the smaller of our two Spur Pins.

The Spur takes its name from its silhouette: the rays fan out asymmetrically, short on one side and sweeping to a point on the other — the shape of a spur. It's the restless version of the sun, caught mid-turn.

We cut it from a single sheet of sterling silver using calado, the pierced openwork technique Taxco silversmiths have used for generations. The negative space is cut away by hand, so what's left is a drawing in silver.

Choose your stone: black onyx, malachite, lapis lazuli or pyrite. Each is natural and hand-selected by us. The pyrite is left uncut, in its raw crystalline form; the others are polished. No two are the same.

Choose your back. A traditional pin with a secure locking clasp, for jackets, coats, hats and structured garments. Or a magnetic back, which holds without ever puncturing the fabric — the one for cashmere, silk, fine knitwear, or anything you'd rather not put a hole through.

Wear it on a lapel, a jacket, a scarf, a bag — or the band of a hat. We make jewelry that moves freely between object, adornment and the way you dress.

Care

Silver is a living material and will develop a patina over time. Polish it with a silver cloth to bring back the shine, or leave it darker — we like it both ways. Keep the stone away from perfume and household cleaners. If you choose pyrite, keep it dry — it's iron-based and holds its flash best that way.

Questions

What is calado? A traditional Taxco technique: the design is cut out of a single sheet of sterling silver by hand, removing the negative space. It's why the rays read as a drawing rather than a solid mass.

What's the difference between the pin back and the magnetic back? The pin back is a traditional clasp with a secure lock — right for jackets, coats, hats and anything structured. The magnetic back holds without piercing the fabric at all, which is what you want on silk, cashmere or fine knits.

Why is the pyrite raw and the other stones polished? Because pyrite is more beautiful uncut. Polishing it would erase the crystalline structure that makes it what it is.
